Frequently Asked Questions

What is A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 French?

These are the varying levels of French language from beginner to mastery. A1 being the most rudimentary, B levels being intermediate and then C1 advanced and finally C2 is mastery.

Is 3 months enough to learn French?

Fluency is widely misconstrued as a precise level when in reality there are many differing degrees of functional fluency. There is conversational fluency for simple day to day matters, but then varying levels based on conversation topics and degrees of complication. In three months of one on one instruction with extensive outside study a student can definitely reach conversational fluency for simpler conversations, but doing so would require significant exposure, dedication and repetition.

What is the 80/20 rule in French?

The 80/20 rule is based on the concept that 80% of normal conversations can be navigated by mastering the 20% most essential pieces of the language. This is achieved by focusing on high frequency verbs, crucial vocabulary and crucial verb tenses. In our private lessons, we run our core curriculum in organic conversations helping you reach these goals as quickly as possible.

What is the best way to learn French quickly?

Obviously the fastest and most effective way to acquire language is by immersion, but that is not a viable option for most people. When it comes to learning a second language, one on one instruction is really the only way to go. At Art of Language we run our lessons in organic conversation and on day 1 our students are speaking in complete sentences. The same way you learn to ride a bike by riding it, you learn to speak by speaking. When 1 on 1 instruction is done correctly, the rate of acquisition is 10 to 1 meaning 1 hour with us is equivalent to about 10 classroom hours.

Which is easier, French or Spanish?

Early learning in French language for native English speakers is considerably more difficult due to silent endings, varying vowel pronunciation and more difficult spelling. Spanish is phonetically consistent making it much more intuitive and easier to reach an intermediate level. Spanish can be more challenging at higher levels of grammar specifically the past tense (pretérito vs. passé composé)
